No knowledge is purposeless. All knowledge that man acquires has some objective. For example, the knowledge of physics and chemistry aims at exploring matter for greater comforts of mankind. The knowledge of mathematics is required for numerous applications in man’s life. The knowledge of medicines and surgery is required for gaining relief from diseases and ailments. The knowledge of history helps in understanding past events to monitor the future course of action. The knowledge of astronomy and space helps in understanding the mysteries of universe for studying their effect on the life on earth. The knowledge of music, dance and other performing arts is meant for pleasure and for change of mind from otherwise dreary life. The knowledge of Pranayam, Yog asanas and numerous physical exercises is required for keeping the body healthy.

Likewise there are thousands of other knowledge in the world and all these aim at serving some purpose for the human kind. All these knowledge together constitute worldly knowledge and their objective is to help the human beings in living a good, comfortable life in the world.

New worldly knowledge have been constantly coming into the world through different human beings. Once a new knowledge comes its benefits are derived by the entire world. Before the knowledge of filament bulb came through Thomas Edison in 1829, the only source of light in the world besides sun was fire. It took a bunch of candles or torches to fully light up a good sized room and the oil lumps, while fairly effective, tended to leave a residue of soot on anything in their vicinity. But now the filament bulb and subsequent inventions like Halogen tube, CFL Bulb and host of other light bulbs illuminate the world. Similar is the case with every other knowledge that came to the world. Once a new knowledge comes to the fore, it increases with time and serves the humanity.

Whereas worldly knowledge come into the world through different human beings the self-knowledge or knowledge of God comes through the Prophets of God. This knowledge then becomes the Holy Scriptures and these are revered by the people as the words of God. This knowledge is said to be written in the ancient Hindu Scriptures, called Upanishads and in other scriptures such an Old Testament. These scriptures contain the revelations that were made to the sages, saints, prophets and their descendents.

Lord Krishna gave the Self-knowledge/Knowledge of God to Arjun before commencement of the Righteous battle of Mahabharta 5000 years ago. His teachings are written in the Bhagavad Gita a Holy Scripture of India. Jesus Christ gave this knowledge to His twelve disciples 2000 years ago and the same is written in the New Testament. Guru Nanak Dev also gave this knowledge to his two disciples and it is written in Guru Granth Sahib. Similarly, when Prophet Mohammad gave this knowledge it became the Holy Quran.

All the Holy Scriptures contain the knowledge of God that was revealed to the world by the Prophets of God that is the creator and controller of the universe. Since all the Prophets were messengers of One God they ought to have given the same knowledge of God to the world. However, mankind fails to look at the knowledge in these scriptures as same and has divided itself into different faiths. Reason for this is that mankind has so far failed to understand the words of God written in the Holy Scriptures and do not know the true meaning and essence of the knowledge of God. That is why the world does not know God despite the fact that these scriptures which contain the knowledge of God have been read for thousand of years. When the understanding of these scriptures becomes available the world will know God and it will be found that the same knowledge of God has been written in all the scriptures.

Before we delve in to the knowledge of God to find out who God is, let us deal with the purpose and objective of this knowledge. Was the knowledge of God meant to improve the life of human beings just like different kinds of worldly knowledge? Does the knowledge of God gives temporary relief and comfort and needs to be replaced by some better knowledge? Can the knowledge of God remove the human suffering and give peace and happiness to all beings? Does the knowledge of God divides the mankind, like worldly knowledge or does it remove the divide and bring oneness? Is there any difference between the followers of the knowledge of God and others or they both remain the same?

Answer to these questions will be very easy to give after one knows the purpose and objective of the knowledge of God. Knowledge of God is meant to give a supreme state to man that cannot be attained by any worldly knowledge. The worldly knowledge cannot do the following for mankind:

a) Worldly knowledge cannot free man from worries and stress completely so that man lives in eternal peace and happiness.

b) Worldly knowledge cannot cure the diseases of mankind whereby every person becomes completely disease less.

c) Worldly knowledge cannot fulfill man’s desires and remove the human suffering completely.

d) Worldly knowledge cannot free man from ageing and thereby solve his old age problems.

e) Worldly knowledge cannot free man from death and give him eternal life.

f) Worldly knowledge cannot unite mankind such that all human beings live in harmony and oneness without enmity and hate.

Whereas worldly knowledge cannot do any of these things the knowledge and wisdom of God in meant to serve only these objectives of mankind. The purpose and objective of the knowledge and wisdom given by the Prophets is to free mankind from sorrow, diseases, ageing and death and unite mankind so that the human beings attain eternal life and live on Earth in peace, harmony and oneness. This has not been achieved so far since as stated earlier mankind has not understood the words and wisdom of God.

The Prophets had revealed the purpose and objective of their knowledge and the same is lying written in the scriptures. In the Bhagavat Gita, Lord Krishna says that the being who is not disturbed by the sense contacts; who is same in joy and sorrow; and who is of steady intellect, he is fit for immortality. People think that Lord Krishna had said about the soul becoming immortal and immortality has to be attained by the soul after death. But this is not true. Lord Krishna has said it clearly that the soul or dweller in the body is eternal and indestructible and it is not killed when the body is killed. If this is true then who has to become immortal? The eternal and indestructible soul or the mortal and destructible body? Obviously the latter since it is mortal that has to become immortal.

The mortal being (physical form) can become immortal provided he is the same in joy and sorrow and becomes sthitpragya or one of steady intellect. The Gita says that the beings die due to the loss of intellect that takes place when they contemplate the objects while performing actions. A person who performs actions without eye on the objects or fruits of actions becomes the same in success and failure and his intellect is not lost. He becomes a not-perishable being and dwells in same body instead of changing the bodies in constant births.

Giving the self knowledge of the beings in the Gita, Lord Krishna says that all beings are eternal beings that neither die nor cease to be but only keep changing the bodies. The birth of the beings in various good and evil wombs/states is caused by their attachment with the three attributes of nature, namely purity, passion and delusion. Lord Krishna says, clearly, that the beings who crosses over these three attributes and attains the Bhava or Consciousness of God is completely freed from sorrow, old age, death and rebirth and attains immortality. A person who is attached with any one of the three attributes of purity, passion and delusion cannot escape death and rebirth. The kind of his next birth is determined by the attribute – purity, passion or delusion – predominating at the time of his death. As against this the person who, following the wisdom of God, transcends these three attributes, he will not only be freed from sorrow but he will also be freed from old age and death and will attain immortality. The freedom from sorrow (worries, diseases, nonfulfilment), old age and death can be obtained by the beings only by understanding the words of God and following the path of wisdom laid down by Him.

In Guru Granth Sahib, Guru Nanak Dev says that the name of God is the medicine of all diseases. He also says that Brahm Gyani (knower of God) lives forever and never dies. He again says that he who has God in his heart neither dies nor is he deceived by maya- the worldly knowledge of delusion.

The difference between a Brahm Gyani or one who has the knowledge of God and those who do not know God is that whereas the Brahm Gyani never dies and lives forever, the other beings are subject to death and birth. The Brahm Gyani will naturally be freed from sorrow, diseases and old age so as to live No person has escaped death shows that no one is Brahm Gyani or no one knows God.

According to Guru Nanak Dev, the name of God is the medicine of all diseases. If this is true, the world does not know the name of God. If the people knew the name of God it would be possible to cure the diseases by His name. People of different faiths remember God by numerous names but this remembrance does not cure their diseases. Those who take the name(s) of God and those who do not take any name both are suffering from same diseases. It means that the name(s) of God remembered by the devotees are not the names of God.

God is an all-pervading power that created the matter and universe and is sustaining the same for billions of years. The names of God that are uttered by the devotees, such as Brahma, Rama, Krishna, Vahe Guru, Jehova, etc. are only pointers towards God. These are not His names. No one has been able to free him from diseases by these names. The name of God that is the medicine of all diseases and that frees one from old age and death is the knowledge and wisdom of God. When a person understands and accepts the knowledge and wisdom of God to be true, he will be said to have taken the name of God. God resides in the hearts of the beings in the form of the knowledge and wisdom of God as given by the Prophets. This knowledge and wisdom resides in the heart of the person who believes it and follows it.

This knowledge and wisdom acts as medicine. It frees the person from all worries and stress, cures his diseases and gives him eternal life.

Jesus Christ also gave the same knowledge to his disciples. He says in the Bible that the person who hears his word and believes God, shall have everlasting life. He shall not come into condemnation but will be passed from death unto life. At another place in the Bible, he says that if a man keeps His saying, he shall never see death. He re-affirms this at another place by saying that whosoever lives and believes in Him shall never see death. He also says that the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

Death is the greatest enemy of mankind. This enemy in the form of death can be defeated by the knowledge and wisdom that came from God and is written in the Holy Scriptures. Man’s failure to defeat death shows that he has not been able to understand and believe the words of God. Man does not believe God otherwise it would be possible to become free from death and live forever by believing God and by keeping His sayings. All the people say that death is imperative and that every person has to die whether he believes or does not believe God. Not only this the people neither believe in whatever has been said by the Prophets nor do they follow their commandments. In the next chapter we will go in to the words of God that are lying written in the scriptures for thousand of years but are neither believed to be true nor followed by the world. But suffice it to say here that the entire mankind is subject to sorrow, old age and death only due to disbelief in and disobeying of the words of God. When the words of God are understood, believed and followed by man, he will be freed from stress, diseases and ageing and his life span will increase. When the knowledge and wisdom of God is fully understood and adopted by man his last enemy in the form of death will be defeated and he will then live forever in absolute peace and happiness.

No we do not need to pray to God for many hours to know and attain God. The truth is that we need to pray to God each moment and every second of our daily lives to reach and attain God.

Each moment? Wow! But man what about our families, jobs and duties? Won’t it ruin what we call the worldly life?

Hold on! No one is asking you to become a monk or stay in seclusion to pray to God each moment. There is a method revealed by Lord Krishna in the Gita by which one can remain linked to God each moment without in the least disturbing the worldly life. In fact in this method one need not bring even the slightest change in the daily routine that one is following. One has to continue to do exactly what one has been doing all along.

This amazing method can be practiced each and every moment simply because it is based on one’s actions. And as you know that actions occur from the body each moment. And in this method one has to renounce each action to God. God is eating, God is working, God is taking a bath, God is driving, God is cooking, God is talking, God is thinking, God is dressing up, God is rising from the bed, God is going to sleep, God is listening to music, God is watching a movie, God is drinking.

Each action of the day can through this method be made into a prayer offered to God. And as this is to be done in the mind and not spoken aloud it does not interfere with one’s worldly life. In fact the other so called religious or spiritual acts can also be included and one can say God is meditating, God is singing hymns or God is performing this ritual. What more even the seemingly most absurd actions happening from the body like sneezing, coughing can be used as a prayer to God by saying within that God is sneezing or God is coughing.

But the important question is what is the effect of this method?

Lord Krishna reveals in the Bhagavad Gita that by renouncing each action to God man becomes free from worries, tension, diseases, old age and even death. All his wishes are fulfilled for he has to even renounce thoughts of desire by saying that God is making this wish. In fact the more actions one renounces in the day the more and better results one gets.

What is self realisation?

Not difficult to answer one would say. To know the self is self realisation.

Fine and very correct. But what is the self? Who are we? And how can we know the self?

These questions have baffled mankind since ages and even after the advent of so many philosophies and religions there are no clear cut answers. Some say something and others says something. There are no definite answers anywhere. Or may be there are but they are hidden in the heap of so many philosophies.

Lord Krishna starts his discourse that came to be known as the Bhagavad Gita by revealing what is the self. There is no need for me to try to decipher his words for you. Why not read and try yourself.

He begins by saying that all bodies are embodied by the all-pervading indestructible.

Again without trying to thrust my own ideas upon you, let me ask you, whom do we regard as the all-pervading indestructible?

Without doubt all the Holy Scriptures be it the Bible, Koran, Guru Granth Sahib or the Upanishads use this term for the entity which we call God.

Now we were trying to solve the mystery of the self. From where did God pop in. He is another mystery which baffles us.

If you also feel so then go back to the afore mentioned words of Lord Krishna. He says that all bodies are embodied by the all-pervading indestructible.

What conclusion does it lead us to?

It is but very clear that he is saying that God lives in each body. In fact he goes on to say that each being is the fragment of God.

Does it mean that the self and God are same? And does it mean that when we talk about self realisation we are talking about God realisation?

By starting his discourse with the information that God lives in every body. Lord Krishna is trying to tell us that the self or soul and God are the same. And when we are talking about self realisation, we are actually speaking about knowing and realising that we are actually God and not humans or men/women.

Lord Krishna says that the self can be known, hold your breath, through Vigyan. Vigyan of course means science. In other words there is a definite science or a practical way by which the self can be known. And this science he declares in no unclear terms is very much different from the rituals we follow in the name of religion.

In the world where we live it is the pairs of opposites that determine and rule. Good and evil, ugly and beautiful, sin and virtue, joy and sorrow, gain and loss, victory and defeat. And the human mind invariably gets affected by these opposites. It praises and appreciates the good or some thing it likes and it criticises and hates the evil or some thing it dislikes.

And these opposite feelings for the good and evil affect us in a negative way. It makes the mind pine and crave for the good or that it likes. And when the craving is not satisfied it leads to frustration. Lord Krishna suggests a way out when he says that by regarding alike all opposites one should join the battle of life. Thus one incurs no sin.

Sin?

Is it a sin to recognise the opposites and regard a thing as good and some thing else as evil?

Sure seems like it, for in the Holy Scripture Guru Granth Sahib it is said –

Hukame andar har koi, Bahar Hukam Na Koi

Everything in the world is happening by the will of God and nothing is outside his will. That means very clearly that everything is happening by the will of God. And if it is so what right do we have to judge anything or anyone? If it is so then it means by regarding some thing as evil we are criticising the will of God by which everything is happening here.

Some might question how evil can happen by the will of God. Well is it not said that even a leaf cannot move without God’s will? Then can so many so-called evil things happen without his will?

In fact there is nothing good or evil as such. It is only due to individual conditioning of mind that one regards some things as good and some others as evil. According to Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita thinking in terms of good and evil leads to attachment to the good and evil and ultimately to death. But when one is free of attachment to the opposites then one is protected even from the greatest fear, that is, death. So Lord Krishna advises the beings to regard all happenings as alike and not be moved by them.

But how can this state of mind be achieved? Normally, as soon as we see something wrong happening in the world we start protesting against it or criticising it. Or we form thoughts of abhorrence.

How can this be prevented and how can one attain a non-judgmental state of mind?

For this Lord Krishna suggests a very wonderful and powerful practice, which he calls the Supreme Secret. The essence of this practice is to consider all actions as those of God or by the will of God and not of individual beings. When this happens the mind does not get attached to the nature of the action or its goodness or badness.

Life is full of so many problems, which we keep tackling throughout, trying our best to overcome them. However although life comes to an end these problems never cease to exist and continue to harass the generations coming after us. Progress in science and technology sure has made life easier but it has not come anywhere near finding permanent solutions to our problems, which though existing outside are more related to the state of one’s mind.

For example one might be having tax related problems. It does seem like a problem that is affecting one from the outside. But a careful analysis proves that even though the cause is outside, the tension, the worry arises within, and it is related to the way one takes the problem. It is not the problem but its perception and the related tension and worrying that disturb us. There are some people who worry without any real reason. They just get into the habit of worrying. While some in a similar situation will let go and not worry at all. But in some other situations the later too are not able to remain unaffected and are swayed by the problems resulting in tension and worries.

What if one were able to keep a peaceful mind in every situation? Would it not help us tackle our problems better? Would it not help us take our failures in a lighter vein thus preventing unnecessary heartburns and even health problems?

In the Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna says that attachment is the cause of all misery in life. And attachment could be to anything – an object, a problem or a person. So what does Lord Krishna suggest? He says that once a being is free from attachment, he acts with his senses under control and attains peace. And in peace all his problems are destroyed.

He points out that the root cause of attachment is the ego which forces us to think this problem is mine, I am facing this problem, I will incur loss, I have to find its solution or there is threat of failure in my life. These thoughts of ego delude the mind resulting in tension and worries.

Lord Krishna says that by destroying the ego and the resultant attachment, a being attains true and lasting peace. Then success or failure cannot disturb him. He then goes on to suggest a very powerful practice by using which the beings can attain a state where all their desires are fulfilled automatically. Just think how wonderful it would be to find that one’s problems are getting solved on their own. Such a state would mean peace of mind and better physical health and longer life too.

A lot has been written about the so-called new age. Some thinkers and scholars have even predicted dates when the new age would set in. It is believed that things on earth shall undergo a major upheaval for the better in the new age and peace and harmony shall reign supreme in this era.

These announcements could be based on astrological calculations or intuitive insights from higher souls or planes. But most of them are consistent in their predictions regarding the change that would take place. Life shall be happier. Man shall become loving and tolerant. To many it sounds like utopia. Something that is virtually impossible. But if we value the words of our prophets, then we realise that there is mention of such a new age in the holy scriptures too. Any way it does sound quite good that so many nice changes shall occur. But the important question is how shall this happen? Will it happen on its own or shall we have to make a conscious effort for it?

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says that whenever there is loss of righteousness in the world the Supreme Lord appears to set things right. In the present age God has descended in the form of the Supreme Truth. Now what is this Supreme Truth?

The Supreme Truth is said to be God and it is said that by accepting it and realising it a being becomes one with God. And when this happens, demoniac traits like greed, jealousy, hatred, selfishness, untruth, violence start to disappear and the Godly virtues like love, compassion, selflessness start to spring forth. And quite obviously when this happens the end result is an age of true and lasting peace and happiness on the earth.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna has revealed a secret supreme path by following which the Supreme Truth can be known and realised very easily in the same life time. All the humans have to do is take to this path and see how quickly the predictions of the new age come true. Every year we see some new disease coming to the fore to cause further anguish to the already harassed human race. And to counter it, billions of precious dollars are spent in research and cure. The famous spiritual master Guru Nanak made a very amazing comment. He said that the name of God is the cure of all diseases. In other words by adopting the name of God all ailments can be removed.

But we all keep reciting many names of God or the prophets we worship. In the West Jesus is a name that is there on every lip. In the Middle East the holy word Allah is uttered reverently by all. And in the East and Far East the names like Krishna, Ram, Buddha and Mahavir are chanted most ceremoniously. But none of the devotees are totally free from diseases.

Then what is the name Guru Nanak has talked about? If we study the holy text Guru Granth Sahib, the mystery is unravelled and it is said that the name of God is the Supreme Truth and by giving place to the Truth in one’s heart and mind one becomes free of all problems of life, including diseases, forever. And not just the so-called curable but even the incurable diseases are rooted out forever.

What is this Supreme Truth about which Guru Nanak has talked?

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna reveals the Supreme Truth which is God. He says that the Supreme Truth is that all we see and feel around us is God. All forms are of God. All beings are God. But this is just information. Just learning it does not work. One has to realise the Supreme Truth that all is God. And when this happens then the supreme light of God removes all ailments from one’s physical form.

But what is the way to this realisation? This too has been explained by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita and this wonderful way or practice has been revealed in recent times after many thousand years. These days a therapy known as past life regression has become a big rage in the West where thousands of people claim that they have been able to remove crucial problems from their lives by peeking into their past lives and getting to the root cause of those problems. This amazing therapy is based on the law of Karma which states that the reason of our present problems lies in the actions or events of past lives. Those who have benefited by it say that when they actually see what event or action in the past life has resulted in some misery or problem in the present, they are able to overcome it.

But if one gives it a thought there appears a major drawback in this method. Suppose you suffer from a disease or physical problem. By past life regression you could get to its cause in the past life thus leading to a cure. But what about the other problems that might come later? Logically one would have to resort to past life regression for every problem that might appear in the future.

Of course there is no harm in this. But what if someone told you that there exists a better alternative that could free you of all Karmic debts at one go? Would it not be wonderful to put an end to all Karmas and be forever free of misery and suffering?

This wonderful alternative has been revealed in the Bhagavad Gita by Lord Krishna. He says that by following this path a being is not bound by actions or their fruits. Thus the effect of all Karmas is removed, for all actions are burnt forever by the fire of Gyan or the wisdom of God.

In the past life regression therapy there is yet another drawback. One might well overcome the effect of Karmas of past lives. But what about the actions of the present life? They will create their own Karmas and one shall have to account for those in this life or some future life.

But by the method suggested by Lord Krishna not only are all the past Karmas are destroyed rather even the actions done in the present life do not create Karmic debt. In other words one is permanently freed of the vicious cycle of Karmas.

We all talk about the ego and what it means. Most of us think that being proud or arrogant is egotism. But our scriptures give a completely different definition of ego. According to them, to think that ‘I exist’ and to think that ‘I am doing something’ or ‘I have to do something’ or ‘something belongs to me’ or ‘the fruits of actions belong to me’ signifies the presence of ego. As long as we have in us the ego in any of these forms we remain deluded by this divine delusion of God.

The ego deludes us to think that we and God are different; that we are ‘I’/men/women, different and separate from God. As against this Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita that all the bodies are embodied by God and all beings are eternal and indestructible fragments of God. In other words God and the being are not different but all beings are forms of God or they are God. Verses 7:4-5 of the Bhagavad Gita reveal that the human form comprising of five gross elements (earth, water, fire, air and ether), mind, intellect and the ego, is the eightfold lower nature of God.

Though all the bodies are embodied by the same God or all beings are forms of God but once in the body the ego deludes the being and it starts thinking that this body is ‘I’; I am performing the actions; everything is happening for me; I have to achieve, I have to succeed, I am the owner of all possessions etc. This ego or the false sense of I-ness deludes us and we fail to know that we all are God and not separate men/women. This ego or the false sense of I-ness is the only cause of all the problems that exist in our lives including death and re-birth.

The true self-realisation by the being, who is in fact God, means realization by him that he is God, not ‘I’/man/woman. Until a person is freed from the ego and realizes that he (the being) is God, he has not known and attained God. Due to this only, the famous poet saint Kabir said –

When ‘I’ was, then God was not,Now when God is, I am not.

Till the veil of delusion called ego is within us we cannot know God and till God is known we cannot become free from worries, sorrows, diseases, ageing, death and re-birth. This means that the biggest enemy of the human beings is their ego, which does not let us have the self-realisation that we are all God. And as soon as the ego is destroyed we get amazing boons in our lives.

Lord Krishna says that the first boon of annihilation of the ego and resultant God-realisation is peace and happiness. The next boon of attaining God is freedom from diseases and ageing. And the ultimate boon of attaining God-hood is freedom from death and constant changing of the bodies by the being. It means attaining immortality and living forever in the same body. In fact in the end of His discourse in the Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna makes the most remarkable statement when he says that when one is freed from ego one becomes fit for attaining the state of God. On realizing that one is God one becomes God and then worries, diseases and old age disappear from life. It might shock you out of your wits if somebody told you that desires and their nonfulfilment leads one to death. The world knows Lord Krishna as the most intriguing incarnation of God who started showing miracles right from his birth. He was born in a prison in Mathura where his parents had been imprisoned by the king Kansa, who feared death at the hands of their eighth child. The cruel king had already killed seven children and Krishna was the eighth. Upon his birth on a dark stormy night, the chains binding his parents fell apart, the lock of the prison door sprang open and all the guards became unconscious. His father carried the newborn in a wicker basket to the safety of the home of a close friend. That very night the friend’s wife had given birth to a girl. Persuaded by his friend, Krishna’s father brought back the girl to the prison and she was killed the next day by the king who assumed her to be the eighth child of the couple.

The world knows Krishna for the acts of mischief he did right from his childhood and remembers him for lifting a mountain to save the village folks from the fury of the rain god. The world also remembers him for killing many demons and Kansa, the mighty king of Mathura. The world knows him for the unfettered love of the Gopis for him. The Bhagavad Gita, a holy book of India, contains the discourse given by Lord Krishna to Arjun, His friend and disciple, before the start of the battle of the Mahabharat. This battle was fought about 5,000 years ago between the Pandavs and the Kauravs who were cousins. The Gita imparts self-knowledge to human beings, reveals the goal of human birth and shows the path for attaining that goal. Though known as an ancient Indian scripture, the Gita contains the message of God for every person. And so do all other holy books. They, too, contain the message of God, spoken through different prophets at different times in different words.

At the very beginning of His discourse, Lord Krishna gives self-knowledge and reveals that the human being is not a man or a woman but God. He says that the all-pervading indestructible God embodies all bodies, that is to say, God has assumed the human form and is living in the world as a human being. All human bodies are of the same God that pervades all. To live and propagate in the world, God has assumed both male and female forms. Though the same God dwells in each human body as living being but due to the ego, beings look at the body as ‘I’ – a man or a woman, and fail to perceive that they are God. Further, this being is eternal and indestructible, who neither dies nor ever ceases to be but lives in different bodies, birth after birth. All humans are eternal living beings; they neither die nor are they killed. They only leave their worn-out bodies and go to new ones.

Although the human being has made tremendous progress in science, technology, art, culture, medicine and other fields, he has yet to make progress on the path of self-knowledge. He has to understand the truth declared in the scriptures and realise that he is God. In other words, the God embodying the human body has to realise that he is God, not man. Verses 15:7-10 of the Gita elucidate that the human being is a fragment of the all-pervading God and is an eternal living being. It further says that God acquires the body with the senses and the mind, and when He leaves it, He takes the senses and the mind and goes to another body. While in the body, God draws the senses and the mind to Him and enjoys the objects of the senses. However, in the body the ego deludes God. He does not perceive that He is God but looks at the body as ‘I’/man/woman. Only those who have the Gyan, that is, true self-knowledge, perceive that God embodies all bodies and enjoys the objects of senses while dwelling in all bodies.

Lord Krishna reveals in the Gita that there are only two ways by which man can be free desire and the ego and become same to all by realizing that all beings are God. First is the path of Gyan or knowledge, called Sankhya and second, the path of Yog. After explaining these two paths He says in Verse 5:6 that it is difficult to become free from the hate and desire by Sankhya but he who is established in Yog quickly attains Brahm, the Bhava or consciousness of sameness towards all.

Yog has two branches – Buddhi Yog and Karma Yog. As explained earlier Buddhi Yog consists of renouncing the fruits of action by fixing one’s intellect on the thought that all fruits are of God and God is experiencing the joys and sorrows. Buddhi Yog frees the person from desire and the ego and makes him a non perishable being whereby he becomes a non-perishable being and stops changing the bodies.

Although Buddhi Yog can make a person non-perishable and give him peace and happiness, it can not make him a Supreme Imperishable Being. A non-perishable being can live up to the end of the day of Brahm but he is also destroyed at the approach of the night of Brahm to take birth again at the beginning of another day of Brahm.

Verses 8:17-20 of the Gita reveal that a day of the all-pervading Brahm or God is of thousand Yugas (aeons) and his night is also of thousand Yugas. During the night of Brahm all beings, who are eternal and indestructible, dwell in the unmanifest Brahm. At the beginning of a day, all manifest beings stream forth from the unmanifest and at the approach of night, they dissolve into the unmanifest. In this way all beings are born again and again at the beginning of the day and are dissolved helplessly at the approach of night. The beginning of a day of Brahm is called creation and the approach of night is called dissolution.

Whereas a non-perishable being is destroyed at the approach of the night or dissolution, a Supreme Imperishable Being is neither destroyed in dissolution nor is he born in creation, as revealed in verses 14:1-2 of the Gita. A person can become non-perishable by renouncing all fruits of action to God by Buddhi Yog, but to become Supreme Imperishable he has also to practice Karma Yog.

Whereas Buddhi Yog consists of renouncing the fruits of action to God, Karma Yog consists of mentally renouncing action itself to God by saying within during action that ‘God is (or God you are) performing the action’. A person who practices Buddhi Yog can be free from desire and the ego but he can not be freed from attachment with the three attributes of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas ( purity passion and delusion ) that are present in the nature of all beings.

Lord Krishna reveals in the Gita that all actions from the bodies are performed by the attributes of nature, and not by the beings. When the beings, who are deluded by the ego think that they perform the actions, they are attached to the attributes that perform the action. The attachment of the beings with the attributes of nature is the cause of there constant births in different bodies. The following verses of the Gita reveal this clearly:

All actions are performed by the Gunas of Prakriti [attributes of Nature]; he who is deluded by the ego thinks, ‘I am the doer.’ Chapter 3:27

Prakriti is said to be the cause behind the act, its instrument and its doer, while Purush is said to be the cause behind the experience of joy and sorrow. Chapter 13:21

Purush, seated in Prakriti, enjoys the attributes born of Prakriti. The attachment with attributes is the cause of its birth in good and evil wombs. Chapter 13:22

As long as a person thinks that he performs the actions, he remains attached to the three attributes of nature that actually perform the actions. A person who performs action by Karma Yog and thinks during actions that God/Nature is performing the action, he is freed from attachment to the attributes and attains the Bhava (consciousness) of God. He will then be freed from sorrow, old age and death and will attain immortality as revealed in the following Verses:

When the seer perceives no doer other than the attributes and knows beyond the attributes, he attains My Bhava. Chapter 14:19

Having crossed over these three attributes arising from the body, the dweller in the body is completely freed from birth, death, old age and sorrow and attains immortality. Chapter 14:20

Though man has made unparallel progress in material knowledge, he does not have self-knowledge. He does not know that he is God and eternal living being, who neither dies nor ceases to exist but simply keeps changing the bodies. He does not know that he is not the doer of any actions and all actions are performed by his nature comprising of the three attributes of purity, passion and delusion. He does not know that he takes constant births in different bodies due to attachment with the three attributes that perform actions. He does not know that he can save himself from old age and death and live in the same body forever by transcending the three attributes of nature and attaining the attributeless Bhava (consciousness) of God. He does not know that to save himself from sorrow, old age and death, all he has to do is to change his thoughts and think that he is not the doer of any actions, as stated, clearly, by Lord Krishna:

He who is united and knows the truth thus thinks, ‘I do nothing at all’ and in seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting, walking, sleeping, breathing, speaking, releasing, seizing, opening and closing the eyes, believes that only the senses are moving among the objects of senses. Chapter 5:8-9

Karma Yog is the highest wisdom of God that can free the beings from stress, diseases ageing and death and make them Supreme Imperishable Beings who will live not just until dissolution but even beyond. Whereas the renouncement of fruits to God by Buddhi Yog can unite the beings to the Bhava or consciousness that is God, the Karma Yog can endow them that all-performing Bhava or consciousness. Like Buddhi Yog, the practice of Karma Yog does not require a person to make any change in his life style and actions. While performing his all actions he has to simply say in his heart that ‘God is (or God you are) performing the action. A simple renouncement of all actions to God will free a person from the three attributes of purity, passion and delusion. He will become free from the ego and desire and will attain God’s attributeless Bhava or consciousness of sameness towards all.

The end goal of every human pursuit is said to be happiness. But can happiness be obtained by material success alone? Can money buy happiness? Do great achievements bring true happiness? The truth is that riches, success and achievements may bring name, fame and pride, but they do not bring happiness. If lack of money and success gives sorrow and suffering their possession also does not give true happiness. The question then is how to find this elusive end of human pursuit? How can one be peaceful and happy, irrespective of whether one has success or failure in life?

Lord Krishna gives answer to this eternal quest of mankind in Verse 2:66 of the Gita. He says:

There is neither intellect nor Bhavna [feeling for God] for the Ayukta [un-united], and to one devoid of Bhavna, there is no peace. To the one without peace, how can there be happiness? Chapter 2:66

Mankind has been ignoring these words of God in his pursuit of happiness. Lord Krishna says, clearly, that unless a person is united (to God) he cannot have peace and without peace, he cannot be happy. Not only this, Lord Krishna says that an un-united person does not have intellect.

All that a person has to do to attain peace and happiness is to unite with God. And for this, he does not have to leave his pursuits of riches, success and achievements in life. As explained earlier, God is self-knowledge and wisdom of sameness towards all beings with the realization that all are God. A person having ego who looks at him and other beings as ‘I’/different men and women, is not united to the wisdom that is God. As against this the person who is free from the ego and who looks at all the beings as God is united to the wisdom that is God. He will be freed from sorrow and will attain peace and happiness.

To free the beings from the ego and unite them to God, Lord Krishna says in the Gita that the beings do not have right to the fruits of action and, therefore, they should perform actions renouncing the fruits to God. Explaining these words of God, most of the writers say that one should do one’s work without worrying about the fruits of action. However, they do not tell how one can avoid worrying about the fruit while performing actions. When a person regards the fruits of action (success or failure) as ‘mine’ and performs with mind on the objects, he is automatically worrying about the fruit. Moreover, when one regards the fruits (success and failure) as ‘mine’, one fails to abide the law of God, which says that one does not have right to the fruits. What one has to really do is to steady one’s intellect on the thought that the fruits of actions are of God. And when the fruit accrue in the form of success or failure, joy or sorrow, one has to mentally renounce the fruit to God by saying within that the success, failure joy or sorrow is of God. When one performs actions with steady intellect fixed on God and thinks that all is happening for God and all fruits of action are of God, one is not worrying about the fruit. He is then united to God and this will give him peace and happiness. Since he does not contemplate the objects, he will not be attached to the objects as stated in Verses 2:62-63. He will break the chain that starts with attachment and gives rise to desire, anger, delusion, confusion of memory, loss of intellect and death. His intellect will become steady and he will not perish but become a non-perishable being.

The wisdom of steadying one’s intellect by renouncing the fruits of action to God has been called Buddhi-yog (Discipline of Intellect) by Lord Krishna. Unless one is united to God by Buddhi-yog one can neither have peace nor happiness and nor can one be freed from constant births in different bodies. A person, who performs actions without renouncing the fruits to God, is bound by the actions. He loses his intellect due to attachment, desire, anger, etc. and perishes to take another birth in a new body.

As denoted by its name, Buddhi-yog is a discipline of intellect and one does not have to bring any change in one’s life style and actions to practice this Yog. To steady one’s intellect and to attain peace and happiness by uniting to God one has to bring change in one’s thoughts and not in actions and enjoyments. One has to remain engaged in usual actions and enjoyments as earlier but with a steady intellect fixed on the thought that all fruits of action are of God and God is enjoying the objects of the senses. This will free him from desire and the ego, unite him to God and give him eternal peace and happiness.

All beings are devoid of peace and happiness and all die since the wisdom of Yog has not been understood. When the beings will understand and follow this highest wisdom of God, they will not just attain peace and happiness they will stop taking constant births in different bodies and become non-perishable beings.

He needs to realize that God is his well-wisher; that God has imparted the self-knowledge and wisdom of Yog for his well being and happiness. He must believe the words of Lord Krishna in Verse 2:66 that unless he is united to God by Buddhi-yog he can not have peace and happiness. The same wisdom that will give peace and happiness to man will also give him self-realization and make him a non-perishable being. It will lead the world to a new age where all beings will live in peace, happiness and oneness realizing that all are God.

Mankind is now about to witness a discovery, which could be the most significant of all discoveries made so far. Like all revolutionary discoveries of the past, this, too, will at first have its share of disbelief and opposition. But if this is the truth, that mankind has been searching for since the beginning of time, it will soon come to be accepted quite like the so-called modern day ‘miracles’ such as the airplane, mobile phone, television and computer.

This discovery is a secret science that can free mankind from sorrow, disease, old age and death and make him immortal. This secret science will enable mankind to become worry less, disease less and age less whereby we will remain ever youthful in absolute peace and happiness. The truth that all scriptures unequivocally declare and which man has to realise in order to become free from sorrow, old age and death, is that he is not man but God. He is the very God who first created matter and the universe, and then the bodies to live in and enjoy His creation. The same God who pervades all also dwells in all bodies. However the ego or sense of I-ness in the body deludes him and he looks at the body as ‘I’ or man/woman and fails to realise that he is God. This ignorance or lack of self-knowledge is the singular cause of all the problems and sufferings of human beings.

Another facet of the truth that we have to realise is that we, the beings never die or cease to exist, but only change bodies birth after birth. When a body is worn out, the being who is eternal leaves that body and enters a new one. This leads to the inevitable question: If the human being is God and eternal living being, who enters a new body after leaving the old one, why can’t he save his body from perishing and live in the same body forever, free from old age and death?

The Bhagavad Gita, the holy book that contains the teachings of Lord Krishna, elucidates why this eternal being perishes and changes bodies and also shows the way to overcome this cycle of birth, death and rebirth. It reveals that the God, who has assumed the human form, has eightfold nature comprising five gross elements (earth, fire, water, air, ether) mind, intellect and the ego (Verse 7:4). As long as this eightfold nature of the being is intact he remains living and dwells in the body. He perishes when his intellect is lost due to attachment and desire (Verses 2:62-63). The eternal Self or being then leaves the body with the senses and the mind and goes to another body (Verse 15:8).

Revealing the cause of death, verses 2:62-63 of the Gita say that when the being performs actions with his mind on the objects, he develops an attachment to the objects. Attachment gives rise to desire, desire to anger, anger to delusion, delusion to confusion of memory and confusion of memory to the loss of intellect. When the intellect is lost, being’s eightfold form perishes. The eternal Self or being then leaves the body and goes to a new one.

Man, who is in fact God, can save himself from perishing by steadying his intellect. A person, who steadies his intellect will not perish or change the body. He will become a non-perishable being and dwell in the same body. The being can steady his intellect by becoming free from desire and ego and by realising that he is God and an eternal living being, not ‘I’/body – a man or a woman.

Becoming free from the desire and ego does not mean abstaining from the enjoyment of the objects. To steady the intellect and become a non-perishable being, a person does not have to bring any change in his actions or lifestyle. He has to continue to perform all actions and enjoy all the objects as usual. What he has to do is to become free from desire and yearning for the objects. It is not the enjoyment of objects but it is the desire for them that leads to anger, delusion, confusion of memory, loss of intellect and death. A person who frees himself from desire and the ego will become a non-perishable being and yet he will continue to enjoy all objects. As against this a person who abstains from the enjoyment of some objects but keeps desiring them is deluded by untruth and meets with death.

To become free from desire and the ego and to attain eternal peace and happiness, Lord Krishna has declared a way in the Bhagavad Gita, which is called Yog. Yog is a science that was once known to the royal sages. With time this science was lost to the world and was not known to any person when Lord Krishna declared it again to Arjun about 5,000 years ago. This is said to be Dharma or righteousness and is very easy to practise. So far man has not been able to derive any benefit from this sovereign knowledge since it could not be understood. The understanding of Yog is now available, thereby making it possible for a person to practise it and attain freedom from desire, ego and death and live forever in peace. Life on planet earth is destined for a big leap. From a perishable being the humans will ascend to the state of the non-perishable and that of the Supreme Imperishable Beings who can live until dissolution and even beyond. And for this, all they have to do is to understand the words of God, perform actions by Yog and free themselves from desire and the ego and attain the Bhava of alikeness to all, realising that all beings are God.

We are presently living in the era of ignorance, known as kaliyug, where man does not have self-realisation. He does not know that he is God. He does not know that all human beings are fragments of the same self or God that first created the matter and universe and then the bodies for Him to live in and enjoy His creation. He does not know that the all-pervading God that has to be attained by him is the self-knowledge and the wisdom of sameness towards all beings with the realisation that all are God. He does not know that when he becomes free from the ego and realises that he and all other beings are same or God, he will have attained God. He does not know that by attaining self-realization and becoming same to all beings, just like God, he can be free from sorrow, old age and death and become immortal. Having attained self-realisation that he and all other beings are God he will stop changing the bodies in constant births and shall live in the same body forever.

Verses 7:4-5 of the Gita reveal that God has two kinds of nature – lower and higher. The ego in the lower nature of God subjects him to constant births and to sorrow and suffering in each birth. On the one hand, the lower nature of being/God and resultant lack of self-realization is the cause of sorrow, diseases, ageing and death and on the other hand, it is responsible for all the conflicts in the world. The conflicts and crimes take place in the world simply because the beings look at themselves as ‘I’ or different men and women and do not have the self-realization that they are same or God. When the beings will know, understand and practice the science of yog, they will attain self-realization. They will then be freed from sorrow, ageing and death and the world will then enter a new age, known as Satyug, where all beings will live in peace, happiness and oneness, having realized that all are God.

Generally it is believed in the world that only the good are eligible to know and reach God. That is why people do good deeds, give charity and help others so that they could attain God. And the world denounces the doers of bad deeds as sinners and declares them unfit to reach God.

But in the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says that the being is not the doer of any good or bad deeds, because all actions are done by nature, the doer-power of God. Lord Krishna also says that the Supreme does not accept the virtues or the sins of any being. It does not matter to God whether one is good or bad or whether one performs good actions or bad actions.

Does it mean that even the people who are into so-called bad deeds can reach God?

Actually the only criterion for attaining God is acceptance of the words of God. No matter whether a person is good or bad, if he accepts the words of God and abides by them, then he becomes fit to know God and reach God. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna goes to the extent of saying that even if a wicked person worships God with devotion he is regarded as a saint.

The ancient Indian scriptures even cite a very good instance, wherein a dacoit who used to murder and loot innocent travellers, got a chance to accept the words of God. He did this and by following the words of God he became sage Valmiki who wrote the much revered scripture, the Ramayan.

The important thing here is not worshipping God, for everyone in the world claims to be doing so. The important thing is to accept the words of God and worship Him by the method revealed by God. If one sticks to the modes of worshipping prevalent in the world, then according to Lord Krishna one can never reach or attain God. Most of these modes vehemently propagate that those into bad deeds are not entitled to reach God. But on the supreme path shown by God himself there is no such restriction. Anyone who has faith and who accepts the words of God and follows the supreme path, in no time sees God with his or her open eyes.

Caught in this web of Karmas and births a human being becomes so deluded and helpless that he never realises that he has fallen into a trap or that there is a way out of it.

This supreme way has been elucidated by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, where he says that the only way out of this mess of repeated births and deaths is annihilation of all Karmas and desires. This supreme way leads to a state where most desires are fulfilled and the Karmas are quickly paid off for good. And then the human being attains a state too good to be true. He becomes God!

It is not easy for the human beings to be free from the centuries old, ever growing knowledge of good and evil and become same to all. Lord Krishna imparts wisdom in the Bhagavad Gita by which a person can become same to all and attain immortality.

We are all living with the delusion that death is imperative; that every person will die. But, contrary to this belief, Jesus Christ says in the Bible that we can become free from death and live forever:

That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:15

Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth in Me hath everlasting life. John 6:47

Verily, verily, I say unto you, if a man keeps my saying, he shall never see death. John 8:51

A fact that is revealed in the Bhagavad Gita as well:

Having crossed over these three attributes arising from the body, the dweller in the body is completely freed from birth, death, old age and sorrow and attains immortality. Chapter 14:20

These scriptures have been read over and over again by mankind for thousands of years, yet no one could understand the real sense of the words contained in them. We could never imagine that terms such as “have eternal life” or “never die” or “completely free from sorrow, old age and death” literally mean living forever. First thing that man needs to understand is that he does not commit any sin by doing any thing, that is, by his actions. God has said again and again that man commits sin by his thoughts and not by his actions. And this sin that one commits by thoughts is the cause of one’s death. Flee fornification. Every sin that a man commiteth is without the body; but he that commiteth fornification, sinneth against his own body. 1-Corinthians 6:18

Ye have heard that it was said by them in old time: Thou shall not commit adultery. But I say unto you that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:27-28

As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one. Roman 3:10

For all have sinned, and come short of the Glory of God. Roman 3:23

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for all have sinned. Roman 5:12

The Bible first asks man to flee fornication and then says that every sin that man commits is without the body. It means that man commits sin by his thoughts, and not by his actions. Fornification is done by a person by his thoughts and he who thus commits fornification, sins against his own body resulting in eventual death.

That man commits fornification and sin by his thoughts, and not by the body, is confirmed by Jesus Christ when He says that a person who looks on a woman to lust has already committed adultery will her in his heart. It means that one commits adultery when one thinks of having sexual relations with a woman/man. It is not material whether one engages in sexual act or not, one commits adultery when one thinks of or desires sexual relation.

Who has not committed adultery in his/her heart by thinking of having sexual relations with a woman/man? None! And that is why all are sinners as declared by the Bible. It says that there is none righteous, not even one; for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

Continuing further, the Bible says that sin entered into the world by one man and death by sin and so death passed upon all men, for all have sinned. Which sin was committed by one man that has continued to be committed down the millennia by every man/woman resulting in his/her death? The Genesis gives the answer in the very beginning and says:

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat; But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

When one regards some things as good and some things as evil he eats from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and commits a sin before God since all things have been created by God. Similarly when one regards men and women as good and evil, whatsoever they may be doing, one eats the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil since all men and women have been created by God in His own image.

Starting with Adam and Eve death passed on to all men since all of them started eating the forbidden fruit by looking at the things as good and evil. Before they started regarding the things as good and evil, Adam and Eve were righteous and they were free from death. They used to roam around naked and did not feel ashamed or looked at nakedness as evil. Once the seed of good and evil was sown in them, it started growing into the vast tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Bible says that human bodies are the kingdoms of God. Starting with the first thought of looking at these kingdoms of God as evil, if naked and good, if clothed, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil has grown to such vastness that even millions of books are falling short to contain this sinful knowledge. Man’s life span has been gradually reducing with the increase in the size of the knowledge of good and evil. From a life span of 800 to 1000 years during the time of Adam and Eve, man’s life span has come down to less than 100 years. And credit (or discredit) for it goes to man’s ever-increasing knowledge of good and evil. When man will cut this vast tree of the ideas of good and evil, his life span will increase. When he goes back to state of Adam and Eve before they committed the sin of eating the forbidden fruit, he will be freed from death and will attain eternal life.

It is possible for man to overcome death and live forever in the same physical form provided he keeps the sayings of Jesus Christ and follows the words spoken by Him:

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. John 5:43-48

A person who loves his enemies, blesses them that curse him, do good to them that hate him and prays for them that persecute him is a true Christian, who will have done what has been said by Jesus Christ. Having become the son of God, like Jesus Christ, he will be freed from the ideas of good and evil. He will then be freed from death and will attain eternal life. It is not necessary to visit any place of worship or live a life of do’s and don’ts to become righteous and attain eternal life. All that is required to increase one’s life span and be free from death is to stop eating the forbidden fruit by not looking at the men and women as good or evil, friends or foes, holy or sinners but by regarding all as alike. This is the wisdom of God that will make a person one with God, like Jesus Christ.

The wisdom of becoming same to all beings was given not just by Jesus Christ but by all the prophets. Lord Krishna who gave His teachings in the form of the Bhagavad Gita says:

He who keeps the same intellect towards the good-hearted, friends, foes, holy also the sinner, he excels. Chapter 6:9

He, who neither hates nor desires, should be considered a perpetual sanyasi [renouncer]. For, Arjuna, he who is free from the pairs of opposites is easily released from bondage. Chapter 5:3

As long as one regards the people as good and evil, friends and foes, or holy and sinners, one cannot be free from sin and bondage. One can have the sense of sameness towards all only when one stops eating the forbidden fruit of the knowledge of good and evil and starts regarding all beings as same – the Kingdoms of God.

The Bhagavad Gita says that all the bodies are embodied by the all-pervading indestructible, that is, by God Himself. All human beings are forms of God or they are themselves God, but they do not have the self-realization. The same spirit or soul lives in all the bodies but due to a delusion created by the ego, every person looks at him as ‘I’- a man or a woman, and fails to know that he is God and so are all other beings. A person who is freed from the delusion created by the ego will become same to all by realizing that all beings are God. He will be freed from the ideas of good and evil and will regard all as same, that is, as God. Having freed from the sin, his life span will increase. A person who becomes perfect like God will be freed from death and will attain eternal life.

Jesus Christ also said that all the bodies are kingdoms of God or all beings are God:

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? I-Corinthians 3:16

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? I-Corinthians 6:19

Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? John 10:34

Jesus Christ and Lord Krishna both said that a person has to keep the sameness towards all since all beings are forms of God or they are God. The person who hates any being hates God and remains subject to sorrow and death. As against this the person who sees the same God dwelling in all bodies, that is, who sees all beings as God and does not hate any being, he will be liberated from sorrow and death and will attain everlasting life.

Followers of all faiths have made the same mistake every time. They regard the prophet or messenger to be God but ignore the knowledge and wisdom given by Him. They fail to understand that it is not the name or form of the prophet but it is the knowledge given by Him, which is Truth and wisdom that is God. If the followers of different faiths believe the words of the respective prophets to be true and follow their words, mankind will become one.

A person can become free from hate and enmity either by believing as true the words of God and following those words or by the practice of the wisdom of Yog given in the Bhagavad Gita. The wisdom of Yog has not been understood by the world and that is why no person has been able to become free from death. Understanding of the wisdom of Yog has now become available since time has come for the world to enter a new age in the world. When this wisdom of God is understood and adopted by all the beings they will realize that they are forms of God or they are God. The world will then enter a new age where all beings will leave the knowledge of good and evil and be free from sin and death. Yog, also known as Yoga, is the latest buzzword in all sections of society. Everyone seems to have been caught by its charm and the promises made by its proponents. Everyone is looking towards it with the hope of finding solutions to all problems, from a common cold to diabetes, from blood pressure to cancer and AIDS. Can Yog solve these and other problems of mankind??

Is Yog the philosopher’s stone whose touch can rid mankind from all sufferings and miseries? Will Yog bring self-realisation to man and help him in finding the answer to his eternal question: Who am I?

The answer is yes and no.

No, if we are talking about the Yog that is known to the world, which consists of some breathing exercises and body postures known as Pranayam and various yoga asanas.

Yes, if we are referring to the Yog imparted by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, which is not known to the world.

The former Yog has been practised by numerous persons over the millennia but it has not saved anyone from sorrow, old age and death. It has not helped them find answer to the question: Who am I? The Yog imparted by Lord Krishna, however, can not only free a person from stress, diseases, old age and death and make him a Supreme Imperishable Being, it can also make him realise that he and all other beings are forms of God or they all are God, not ‘I’ or men/women.

At the very beginning of His teachings to Arjun, Lord Krishna revealed that all bodies are embodied by the all-pervading Indestructible, that is by God. He further revealed that all beings are eternal living beings who neither die nor cease to exist but only keep changing their bodies birth after birth. If a being is an eternal and indestructible God, who leaves one body to go to another, why can’t he save his body from perishing and live in same body forever? He can, says Lord Krishna in the Gita:

The Purush who is not disturbed by these [sense contacts], who is same in joy and sorrow, who is of steady intellect is fit for immortality. Chapter 2:15

The Yoga comprising Pranayam and body postures can improve the health of the practitioner like any other fitness programme but it cannot free him from sorrow, old age and death and make him immortal. As against this, the person who practises the Yog imparted by Lord Krishna can be completely liberated from sorrow (stress, worries, diseases), old age and death and become immortal. He will then stop changing bodies but dwell in the same body forever.

Yog has two branches: Buddhi Yog and Karma Yog. Buddhi Yog is a discipline of the intellect and consists of renouncing the results of all actions to God. Karma Yog is a discipline of the mind and consists of mentally renouncing all actions to God, while performing them. Lord Krishna has asked us to renounce the fruits and actions to God since this unites us to God and frees us from the bonds of actions.

Buddhi Yog is based on the scriptural ordinance that we do not have the right to the fruits of actions (Verse 2:47). Lord Krishna therefore asks us to engage in actions without motive and renounce the fruits of actions to God. To unite with God by Buddhi Yog, a person does not have to bring any change in his lifestyle and actions. He has to continue to perform all his usual actions and enjoy all the sense objects as before. All he has to do is to steady his intellect on the thought that the fruits of actions (success, failure, gain, loss, material possessions) are of God and God is experiencing the joys and sorrows. This frees the being from desire and the ego and endows him the state of Brahm, attaining which he becomes a non-perishable being.

Those who contemplate the objects and perform actions with an eye on the fruit lead themselves to death and re-birth:

A man contemplating the objects develops attachment with them. From attachment arises desire and from desire arises anger. Chapter 2:62

From anger arises delusion, from delusion confusion of memory, from confusion of memory loss of intellect, from the loss of intellect he perishes.Chapter 2:63

It may thus be seem that a person dies due to a loss of intellect that is caused by a chain reaction that starts with the contemplation of objects while performing actions. Those who seek the fruits of actions have been called unintelligent; they fail to attain peace and happiness and eventually perish due to the loss of intellect:

Mere action is far inferior to Buddhi Yog [union by intellect]. O Dhananjay, take refuge in the Buddhi Yog; unintelligent are those who seek the fruit. Chapter 2:49

There is neither intellect nor Bhavana [feeling for God] for the ununited, and to one devoid of Bhavana, there is no peace. To the one without peace, how can there be happiness? Chapter 2:66

We can also unite ourselves to God by Karma Yog, which is a discipline of the mind. It consists of mentally renouncing the actions to God while performing the actions by saying within that God is (or God You are) performing the action. Karma Yog is based on the truth revealed in the Gita that actions are performed by Nature, and not by the beings:

All actions are preformed by the attributes of Nature; he who is deluded by the ego thinks, ‘I am the doer.’ Chapter 3:27

Therefore, engage in work always without attachment; for by performing action without attachment, the being attains the Supreme. Chapter 3:19

Mentally renouncing all actions unto Me, regarding Me as supreme, resorting to Buddhi Yog, fix your mind ever on Me. Chapter 18:57

Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever charity you do, whatever austerity you observe, O son of Kunti, offer all that to Me. Chapter 9:27

Thus freed from the bonds of actions and good and bad fruits; the Atma [Self] united by Sanyas Yog, liberated, shall come to Me. Chapter 9:28

Karma Yog does not consist of performing or not performing any specified actions or abstaining from the enjoyment of any sense objects. Karma Yog is a Discipline of mind and consists of mentally renouncing the sense of doership to God while performing the actions. It frees the being from the ego and attachment with the attributes of nature that perform all actions and gives the self-realisation that the being is God, not ‘I’, and so are all other beings. The being who transcends the attributes of nature and attains God-like sameness towards all beings realising that all are God will be freed from stress, diseases, old age and death and will attain immortality. A person reaches the Supreme God only when he is without enmity towards any being – good, bad, holy or sinner – having realised that all beings are forms of God or they are God. This Bhava of sameness towards all beings is the Supreme God that pervades the entire existence. A person who attains this Bhava while living is liberated from birth and death.

Even here birth is overcome by those whose mind rests in sameness; Brahm [God] is indeed without blemish and equal, therefore they (whose mind rest in sameness) are established in Brahm. Chapter 5:19

He who keeps the same intellect towards the good-hearted, friends, foes, the holy and also the sinners, he excels.
Chapter 6:9

The Wisdom or Bhava of sameness towards all, which is the Supreme God, cannot be attained by the performance of any sacrifices, austerities and charities. But a person who performs his actions by Yog, that is by mentally renouncing the actions and fruits to God, attains Wisdom on being established in Yog.

Being Wisdom, the all-pervading God can be worshipped by beings by their respective actions:

Devoted to his own respective actions, each man attains perfection. How does each man, engaged in his own actions, attain perfection, that do thou hear.
Chapter 18:45

He from whom all the beings emerge and by whom all this is pervaded, by worshipping Him with one’s actions, does man attain perfection.
Chapter 18:46

The Yog by way of the renunciation of actions and their fruits to God is the highest Wisdom of God. It can liberate all of us from sorrow, old age and death and make us Supreme Imperishable Beings.

It is hard to believe, but there was a time when landing on the moon was quite beyond the imagination of man. Before that, there was a time – once again, difficult to imagine – when flying was beyond man’s comprehension. Just about a hundred years ago, people used to laugh at the Wright Brothers and considered their attempts to fly foolhardy. Similarly, before Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876 or JL Baird invented the television in the 1920s, talking to someone situated miles away or seeing people and events from all over the world, seated comfortably at home would have seemed a mere fantasy. Today we accept all this and much more as a matter of routine.

Mankind is now about to witness a discovery, which could be the most significant of all discoveries made so far. Like all revolutionary discoveries of the past, this, too, will at first have its share of disbelief and opposition. But if this is the truth, that mankind has been searching for since the beginning of time, it will soon come to be accepted quite like the so-called modern day ‘miracles’ such as the aeroplane, mobile phone, television and computer.

This discovery is a secret science that promises to free mankind from sorrow, disease, old age and death. This knowledge and wisdom has been lying hidden in our holy scriptures for the past thousands of years, but as its true understanding has not been available, we have not benefitted from it. The truth that all scriptures unequivocally declare and which man has to realise in order to become free from sorrow, old age and death, is that the human being is not man but God. He is fragment of the very God who first created matter and the universe, and then the bodies to live in and enjoy His creation. The same God who pervades all also dwells in all bodies. The ego or sense of I-ness deludes him in the body and he looks at the body as ‘I’ or man/woman and fails to realise that he is God. This ignorance or lack of self-knowledge is the singular cause of all the problems and sufferings of human beings.

Another facet of the truth that we have to realise is that the beings never die or cease to exist, but only change bodies birth after birth. When a body is worn out, the being who is eternal leaves that body and enters a new one. This leads to the inevitable question: If the human being is God and eternal living being, why can’t he save his body from perishing and live in the same body forever, free from old age and death?

The Bhagavad Gita, the holy book that contains the teachings of Lord Krishna, elucidates why this eternal being perishes and changes bodies and also shows the way to overcome this cycle of birth, death and rebirth. It reveals that all beings, comprising the self, have five gross elements along with the mind, intellect and the ego (Verse 7:4). As long as this eightfold nature of the being is intact he remains living and dwells in the body. He perishes when his intellect is lost due to attachment and desire. The eternal Self then leaves the body with the senses and the mind and goes to another body (Verse 15:8). Verses 2:62-63 of the Gita say that when the being performs actions with his mind on the objects, he develops an attachment to the objects. Attachment gives rise to desire, desire to anger, anger to delusion, delusion to confusion of memory and confusion of memory to the loss of intellect. When the intellect is lost, the being perishes. The eternal Self then leaves the body and goes to a new one.

The being, who is in fact God, can save himself from perishing by steadying his intellect. The being who steadies his intellect will not perish or change the body. He will become a non-perishable being and dwell in the same body. The being can steady his intellect by the wisdom of Yog imparted in the Gita. Yog does not consist of performing or not performing any specified actions or abstaining from the enjoyment of any sense objects. Yog is a Discipline of Intellect and consists of performing all the usual actions with a steady intellect fixed on the thought that the fruits(or results) of actions are of God and God is enjoying the sense objects and experiencing the joys and sorrows. This will eventually free the being from the desire and ego and he will break the chain that starts with attachment to objects and ends with the loss of intellect and death. A person who is freed from the desire and ego and whose intellect is steadied will attain the state of Brahm or God. Having become a non-perishable being he will stop changing the bodies and shall dwell in the same body forever.

The wisdom of Yog is lying written in the Bhagavad Gita for 5000 years but its understanding was not available. The understanding of this wisdom has now become available since time has come for a new age in the world where all beings will live in peace, harmony and oneness, having realised that all are same, that is, all are God.
